Be more productive and set up your workspace for efficiency | Tips and Tricks to be more productive
Having your workspace set up properly is important in being efficient in your work. Since I've been spending a lot of time at my CNC machine, I've found several things that needed to be organized in order to be more efficient. This video is a bit of a tour of my cnc workcenter. I've made several improvements, and want to show some of the things I've done to make that area more efficient. Hopefully you can take some of these ideas and implement some of these ideas in your shop.

Multiscale Cigar Box Guitar! | Rebuilding a previous Guitar Build
Переглядів 52021 день тому
I originally built this Cigar Box Guitar several years ago, but due to a design error I could never really play this instrument. I removed too much material on the neck and it was very unstable. I decided to build an entirely new neck for this guitar. This time it will be much more stable and I'll be able to play it. I decided to try out some new techniques I've been learning and make a multisc...

I recently came across the left over saw blade I used to make the irons for my homemade finger planes. (link below) I decided to use it to make a custom knife. 15 coats. More's Law. Some is good, more is better and too much is just right. Sir...guess you were going for the deep looking finish. That's all good. But be advised. The thick finish will show dings and dents easier over time. The poly is not harder than the wood. If someone burns through 15 coats with 2000 grit they might want to consider a different hobby. After years of aggravation I finally mastered the art of spraying poly. Seems to be a superior finish. A well done video. Thanks.

    We used a tire machine to mount tires even 50 years ago. It was pneumatic and you locked the rim down and it was all pretty much mechanical but even then it took a little effort. The worst thing was when radials came in. Radials in those days for some reason were kind of compressed in the middle so the bead would never meet the rim for a good seal when mounting. They had to install a special additional part to the machine that blew air up from the bottom side so that the thing would seal. It went around the whole tire at the bottom and had air holes in it and when you attached the air hose to the stem and hit the air, it went in through the stem and then up from behind the tire. Radials were always more trouble, at least for the first few years. The thing to watch out for back then was the steel belt wearing through the tires, you had to keep an eye on old tires or you could get cut from the steel fibers in the belt on a worn tire being replaced. We used to sand the bead with a wire brush on a drill before mounting and also the area where the new stem went in. We never used any sealer of any kind on the rims. Totally unnecessary, just checked the bead for leaks before mounting and 99.9% of the time no problem at all. I am amazed at the BS where they don't replace the stem with every new tire, really bad service to not do that. As for taking a tire off a car, the ones with fender skirts could really be a pain and as I recall I think it was Buicks or maybe Oldsmobiles where the rim liked to rust itself onto the brake drums. For that you hit it from behind with a sledge hammer but sometimes they had to be taken to someone to heat up the rim with a torch to break it.

    Non-ethanol has a higher octane, rong. Octane is controlled by the additives added. Ethanol has a higher octane number than gasoline. Higher octane in premium gas just has different additives. Water absorption, and the use of corn as the source are the biggest concerns. Along with the hoses used in older vehicles that can't tolerate ethanol. I use E-free in all gas power tools, the boat, and DW's 53 Ford, which don't get used regularly. E-gas in both daily drivers. TETO

    So, I decided to have a crack at designing my own, to fit my router. Made some changes, pivot slots in from the top, rather than hangs from elastic, which inverts the radii of the profile wheels (lower wheel radius for greater cut and vice-versa), but allows for working in even passes from one side of the neck, around to the other. I can also 3D print my radius wheels, making for a more mathematically precise curve transition. I haven't even built the design yet and I LOVE this tool. My estimate is less than AU$100 (~US$67) from go to woh-uo there, it's done. Less for me because I already have the necessary bearings for the profile wheels to run on and I'll only need a single 1200x600z12mm sheet of structural ply to build it. All of it other than the screws bolts and profile wheels. Thank you for showing me the way to realise a lifelong dream!

    One of the biggest ripoffs of the gas industry is the fact that filling stations have mixers on site to blend ethanol with unleaded gas and charge less per gallon than fuel that is not bended at all. I have used nonethanol fuel on all small engines I own with no problems whatsoever.

    You are 100% correct!!! The "not a true luthier" crowd are nothing more than snobs. It's not the tool, it's the craftsman using it. If a builder uses a CNC and builds a beautiful string instrument, they're a luthier. If they use nothing but bone glue and a pocket knife and it's a beautiful instrument, they're a luthier. I stand with you, dude. How playable? Tone? They're the only measures of luthiery.

    Been there. The valve side of rim needs to be supported so that side bead can ‘seat’ where it belongs. Then you are pushing the other bead down against the rim instead of pulling the rim up and fighting the tire sidewall width.

    Hi! Thank you for very useful video and great tips - immediate subscription! I tried to do something similar, but something went a bit off, so I’m kindly asking you for an advice: I have a wooden IKEA table. Its top made of several wooden blocks, so it’s not a single sheet of wood. I dyed it using water-based dye, and covered it with the first coat of polyurethane lacquer. The thing is that after applying the first coat I can see that the surface gone patchy - some wooden blocks are glossy and smooth, and some - dull and a bit rough to the touch, where the wood absorbed the lacquer. I was going to use fine sandpaper to even the surface after the first coat of lacquer. But now I’m a bit confused as I don’t know if I could damage the dye layer on the dull patches and expose the wood, as it is obviously very thin. What would you suggest to do in this case? I was going to do at least three coats of lacquer with sanding in between.

    • @homebuiltshop
      @homebuiltshop 6 днів тому

      As long as you sand very lightly, just enough to remove the high spots you should be ok. Even if you don't get it totally smooth, you can apply the next coat. If it was me, I'd probably apply another coat before sanding. This will give you a little more finish on top of the dye. Then sand lightly between coats until it's smooth. It may take more than 3 coats.

    • @vsemprivet
      @vsemprivet 4 дні тому

      @@homebuiltshop Today I lighly sanded the first coat of poly with 700 grit sandpaper on the block, and fortunately the thickness of the layer allowed me not to damage the stain layer. After that I put on the second layer of poly, this time diluted with mineral spirit at 3 to 1 ratio. It worked very well. So I think I'll continue this routine, as the main danger thankfully is behind.

    Turns out that if you use mineral oil instead of tung oil, you don't need any solvent and the material is not stiff at all. The material is still burn resistant and very durable, let alone 100% waterproof. This has an additional benefit of not wearing off because it is so pliable. Don't use too much mineral oil so that there is not any oily residue. It is one bottle of mineral oil to two packs of wax.

    I've never been into pickup swapping but I had a pair of gibson 57 classics sitting around. I got a little reckless and widened my carvin h2t's pickup holes with a Dremel. The gibsons are still mounted using the plastic pieces and are adjustable but I was worried that they were too snug against the body now.... possibly killing sustain/resonance. It's a chambered guitar. I'm rewiring it today with new electronics. It seems fine. Chime in if I'm neutering my guitar this way please.
